This is a security issue, actually. An orphan is a program or computer product that is no longer supported. Examples include Microsoft Expressions, which I still use to format this site, and PalmPilot, which I have sitting in a drawer because it won't sync to newer computers, and Adobe Flash Player, which means I can't play my mindless online games anymore.
Some of these don't matter. Adobe no longer supports Flash Player, and so you don't use it. Some orphaned programs, like Internet Explorer, you really need to stop using. Web browsers have so many updates because of security issues. Newer versions include patches that keep out hackers. In addition, many websites have programming that the older browsers don't support. Good programs have options to update automatically. Bad programs have options to update automatically that completely mess up vital things so you lose days of work.
The operating system Windows works along the same lines. It was very irritating to update to Windows 10, but it does work pretty well for the average user. No, no one cares about you, LINUX users. Computers that were too old to use 10 very well might be too unsafe to use with an internet connection. You need to take care of Windows by letting it update regularly, however. It will protect you against malware which can protect you against identity theft. Unless it installs the malware and sends all your secrets to China. One of the two.
The question is, however, why does God care if you uninstall your orphans and update Windows? It's just good resource stewardship. If a simple fix can prevent catastrophic harm and save time, money, and frustration, it's a pretty easy choice. It would be tragic if a bad actor was able to hack into my computer and turn all the NotQuestions graphics into pictures of cats. No, that was not a challenge. Of course, no computer system is infallible, but reputable companies act in their own best interests by protecting their customers. Or by selling their customers' data to China.
So, update your systems. Get rid of Microsoft Expressions. Exult in the fact we no longer have to get bombarded by Flash Player update notifications every half-hour. And if you know people who don't have people in their lives to help them, like, say
widows and orphans, offer to help them out, too.
